- v5.0 - Released in February 2002
- New Features:
- • 531 more error codes have been added (for a total of 5,883 error codes)
- • More detailed explanations have been added or enhanced. The database
- now has well over 1,000 detailed explanations in it.
- • 24 more error groups have been added (for a total of 216 groups)
- • An "Error Phrase" window has been added. This option allows you to
- look an error up when no number or name is included in the error text.
- Detailed explanations for all phrases listed are included.
- • Explanation statistics are now available detailing
- 1) the version of B&B when the explanation first appeared
- 2) when the explanation was last updated
- 3) the number of characters contained in the explanation
- 4) the number of words contained in the explanation
- 5) the number of BIG words contained in the explanation
- (words with 3 or more syllables)
- 6) the number of paragraphs contained in the explanation
- 7) the Gunning FOG index value of the explanation
- 8) the Flesch index value of the explanation and it's
- reading level equivalent
- • The contents of the "Examine File" window can now be exported
- as a tab-delimited file (Pro version only)
- • The Numerically sorted Mac OS error list may be displayed in
- ascending or descending order

- Changes:
- • All "Close" buttons have been eliminated. They were redundant.
- • Error names of none001 through none459 have been renamed to
- NoName001 through NoName459. The use of none999-style naming
- has been dropped.
- • The use of "PRO" to refer to the professional version of Black & Bleu™
- has been replaced with the letters "Pro". The standard version is
- now tagged with the letters "Std".
- • Explanations may now be exported from the "Big Picture" window
- (Pro version only).
- • The "Camera" error category has been renamed to "QuickTake Camera".
- This new name more correctly reflects the source of the errors.
- • The file "About This Folder" in the "Notes" folder is now a "Read Only"
- file.
- • Support for Mac OS X has been withdrawn. Details are available
- in the file titled "Mac OS X Advisory".

- Bugs fixed:
- • Pasting a value into a Sad Mac data entry box would result in a
- "No such error" message.
- • Selecting the first radio button of the Computer Type in the Sad Mac
- window (after first entering an error number) would fail to change
- the display to a single data entry box.
- • Rich Text Format (RTF) could not be pasted from the clipboard
- into the "Find" window.
- • MacsBug (and other "special" types of files) would appear to fail
- to be properly scanned by the "Examine File" option.
- • Database searches that produced a large number of items found would
- cause strange behavior as the items were added to the list of results.
- • Clicking the mouse in the Mas OS Errors window Popup Menu but not
- selecting anything would sometimes change the display anyway.
- • Several spelling errors (primarily in the "Feedback" sections of the
- explanations) were corrected.

- • When using Mac OS X, double-clicking the "B & B Database" file would
- cause a warning to display saying that the "Examine a File" option
- was not available.
- • Under rare conditions Black & Bleu's license key would not be recorded.
- This would require entering the license key each time the application
- was launched.

- • The number of error codes in the database has grown by 307 to a
- total of 5,352 codes

- • The Popup menu in the Mac OS Errors window now displays either
- error names or list names depending on the setting chosen in the
- new Options menu

- Changes:
- • Due to the increased number of errors in the database, the
- Mac OS Errors window and the Numeric List window now display
- the word "Initializing" while the database is copied from disk to RAM.
- Previously, only machines with a CPU rating of less than 90 MHz would
- display this word
- • The word "explanation" has replaced the word "version" in the
- Mac OS Errors window
- • The type size of the "Apple's Explanation" text has been reduced
- to 9 point. This allows Apple's complete text for every error to be
- displayed rather than just a portion of the longer error descriptions
- • If used on Mac OS X, the "Request" (an error analysis) button is not
- displayed. Request an Error Analysis is not compatible with Mac OS X
- • The explanation database has been moved out of the application itself
- and into a separate file
- • "Cut & Paste" is now permitted when entering your License Key
- • All error lists are now presented with an alternating gray or white
- background
- • The files in the "For Developers" folder have been removed and
- replaced with a note indicating that a Developer SDK is available
- • The exported text file now includes contact information in the
- copyright notice.
- • Exported explanations now include the words "User Explanation"
- or "Developer Explanation"
- • The File menu item text "Export Explanation" was somewhat
- confusing. It has been changed to "Export the Explanation".
- • A checkmark now appears next to the menu item of the Tools menu
- representing the active window.
- • The File menu item titled "Open File" has been changed to
- "Examine File for Libraries" to better indicate its purpose.
- • The "Examine File for Libraries" selection is no longer available on
- 68k machines since the Mac OS does't use Shared Libraries when
- run on these machines.

- Bugs fixed:
- • The explanation scroll bar in the Mac OS Errors window would
- sometimes get out-of-sync with the text
- • Explanations that didn't fill up the entire explanation area of the
- window would end with a vertical bar (text cursor)
- • After re-activating either the Mac OS Errors or Sad Mac Codes window,
- the explanation text would revert to the beginning of the text
- • The Find window would allow you to type non-printable characters
- into the "Text to locate" box. There are no non-printable characters
- in the database
- • The result of a Sad Mac database search would not automatically
- be scrolled into view
- • If you tried to "Annotate" an eror code and the annotation file
- existed (but was empty), you would get a -48 error
- • On 68k Macs, if you searched ONLY the Sad Mac codes for the word
- "chips" and selected something from the list that was produced,
- when you pressed the "View" button, your system would crash with
- a type 33 error or type 1 error
- • Multiple "About" windows could be opened
- • After prolonged use, Black & Bleu™ would run out of memory

- • A "runtime library" for Developers is included. This allows you
- to incorporate the Black & Bleu™ error database into your
- own applications (requires a separate cashless license)
- Changes:
- • References to "Normal User" have been changed to "User"
- • References to "Programmer" have been changed to "Developer".
- • The "standard" and "PRO" applications have been combined (to make
- the download smaller). The application will "auto-configure" itself
- to "standard" or "PRO" when you enter your License key.
- Minor bugs fixed:
- • Selecting something besides the "Complete" list from the list menu
- then opening the Numeric List would cause a crash
- • Exporting a Sad Mac code listed the error as 123456789
- • "a" and "an" grammar corrections have been made on the main screen

- • Increased the memory footprint from 1.5 MB to 1.8 MB due
- to increased list sizes
- Minor bugs fixed:
- • If you requested an error analysis for an error that wasn't
- explained, sometimes you would get a warning that the error
- WAS already explained.
- • If you had an explanation visible and partially scrolled
- down from the top and then selected another application
- when you came back to Black & Bleu™, the scroll bar would be
- set to the same place but the text would be at the top again.
